PERFORMING ARTS CLASSES

 

THEATRE FOUNDATIONS I: THEATRE FUNDAMENTALS (1 CREDIT)

An introduction to the fundamentals of drama including history, methods of personality, versatility, power, confidence, freedom of movement, voice, film acting, instinctive ensemble, focus on partner/environment, specificity, and script analysis. Basic concepts are presented through the use of exercises and improvisation. Students will develop drama skills through intense in-class instruction and participation as well as performance opportunities. This class is a prerequisite for Acting II and III. Teacher approval may also release a student from this requirement. Meets the state requirement for Arts credit.

 

THEATRE FOUNDATIONS II: ACTING CRAFT/SCENE STUDY: (1 CREDIT)

Prerequisite: Theatre Foundation I or teacher signature.

Students will focus on developing the fundamental skills used in rehearsing and performing modern realistic plays. Through an exploration of various acting techniques, students acquire the tools and skills necessary for honest characterization. In year one the standards include: The Actor's Voice, The Physical Actor, Audition Prep (including resumes and portfolios), Dramatic Structure (including playwriting) and Theatre History.

 

THEATRE FOUNDATION III/IV: Play Production (1 CREDIT)

For Juniors and Seniors only: Prerequisite is Theatre Foundation II.

Year Two adds Improvisation skills, Acting History, Shakespeare Team, Classical Voice for the Stage, Physicality and Character Development through play production. Participation in the Region Drama Festival is mandatory. The Advanced actor will prepare for college entrance auditions through compiling an official resume and audition portfolio. (may be repeated for credit)

 

MUSIC/DANCE/THEATRE COMPANY (1 CREDIT)

This course introduces students to the American musical theatre repertoire concentrating on ensemble and solo singing, with an emphasis on vocal technique, diction, and musicality. This course will help prepare students for a career in musical theatre. Students will review the history of musicals, assess different career options, and receive training in audition techniques and resume preparation. The course will also provide instruction on the three elements of musical - song, drama, and dance - and create a framework in which these are blended seamlessly into an individualized performance style. (May be repeated for credit.) Participation in both school musicals is mandatory. Outside performances and travel a high probability.

 

DANCE I OR BEGINNING DANCE:

Dance I is an introduction to basic dance technique and performance and the development of such things as physical strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and total fitness. Students will gain experience in the movement styles of ballet, jazz, and modern. Students will expand their dance vocabulary and skills, and develop their creative abilities through improvisation, choreography, and performance. They will be required to perform choreography as a class in dance performances.

 

DANCE II OR INTERMEDIATE DANCE:

Dance II is a continuation of the development of basic dance technique and performance and the development of such things as physical strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and total fitness. Students will develop skills in the movement styles of ballet, jazz, tap and modern. Students will expand their dance vocabulary and skills, and develop their creative abilities through improvisation, choreography, and performance. They will be required to perform choreography as a class in dance performances.

 

DANCE III OR ADVANCED DANCE:

Dance III is a continuation of the development of advanced dance technique and performance and the development of such things as physical strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and total fitness. Students will develop skills in the movement styles of ballet, jazz, tap and modern. Students will expand their dance vocabulary and skills, and develop their creative abilities through improvisation, extensive studies in the principals of choreography, teaching and performance. Students will be introduced to the history of European and American dance forms from the beginnings of classical ballet to the development of modern dance. They will be required to perform choreography as a class in dance performances.

DANCE COMPANY (1 CREDIT)

Dance Company is Tuacahn High School 's premiere dance performance group, as well as an advanced study of dance technique and performance and the development of such things as physical strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and total fitness. Students will expand their dance vocabulary and skills, and develop their creative abilities through improvisation, choreography, performance, and teaching. They will be required to choreograph and perform choreography as a class in dance performances.

CHORUS (Concert, Women's, Madrigals) ( 1 CREDIT)

The Choir classes are designed to teach the student basic singing skills with a balance of songs and singing instruction to help develop musical literacy and artistic vocal expression. The student will be taught proper vocal technique, confident vocal production, expressive singing and enjoyable music making. Students will learn a large repertoire of songs to perform in concert as well as for the community and school competitions. The students are also coached in solo, duet and small ensemble work as well. Concert performance is required in all three choirs.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE/JAZZ (1 CREDIT)
Students enrolled in this class must play an instrument. The student will develop skills necessary to play the instrument of choice with facility and skill. These skills will include, but are not limited to, register development, breath control, technical facility, scale development, embouchure development, artistic expression, and instrumental care. This will be accomplished through in-class practice and ensemble playing. All will be expected to perform in a recital/concert setting. Students will be graded on participation and personal improvement.

 

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE/ORCHESTRA (1 CREDIT)
Students enrolled in this class must play an instrument. The student will develop skills necessary to play the instrument of choice with facility and skill. These skills will include, but are not limited to, register development, breath control, technical facility, scale development, embouchure development, artistic expression, and instrumental care. This will be accomplished through in-class practice and ensemble playing. All participants will also prepare solo work, and will be expected to perform in a recital/concert setting. Students will be graded on participation and personal improvement.
